Once upon a time, I would plan elaborate dishes from start to finish for Thanksgiving. Everything had to be scheduled and planned, because there was no room for error between the amazing array of dishes I would make.
The problem? It was tiring. I didn’t sit down from early Thanksgiving morning (usually after only a few hours of sleep) until dinner was served at 4. And during that whole time, I would be cooking dish after dish after dish. While the food was awesome and everyone loved it, the day was just a blur of cooking for me.
Then I smartened up. When it comes to Thanksgiving, where the turkey and its accompaniments are king, it’s better to just go simple with the appetizers – then you have a chance to enjoy the day as much as much as everyone else.
Here’s how to plan a delicious – but easy – appetizer spread for Thanksgiving:
1. Choose no more than one “involved” dish. Want a hot appetizer? Keep it to no more than one, so that it doesn’t take away from your meal preparation. Something like Slow Cooker Cranberry Barbecue Meatballs or Mini Crescent Dogs, both of which are fast to prepare but tasty too.
2. Make ahead! Dishes that can be made in advance are great for a Thanksgiving appetizer spread. Try something like Prosciutto and Arugula Deviled Eggs.
3. Plan a cheese plate. Cheeses. Crackers. Perfect. Choose a few different cheeses such as cranberry goat cheese, cheddar and smoked gouda and serve them with either crackers or thin slices of French bread. It’s super easy but most people will adore this holiday appetizer.
