If you’ve been following Tablespoon, you know we’re serious rainbow fans!

Our bloggers have turned some ordinary edibles into extraordinary incredibles by adding rainbow colors. From bread and donuts to pancakes and cheesecake, food never looked so happy.

Then, just when we thought our rainbow was fading, this article jiggled its way into our hearts from BuzzFeed.com, and we knew we had to give it a try.

Rainbow Gelatin Orange Wedges – bright translucent smiles of gelatin that catch sunlight like a prism — are a total score! What could be easier than adding water to boxed gelatin and pouring it into orange-rind cups? This is one killer creative presentation …

Rainbow Gelatin Orange Wedges Recipe

Come on — give it a try! This is an easy and fun recipe for summer. Here we go:

First, wash 9 oranges and cut them in half. You can scoop them out and use the orange sections for a salad, or do it the cheater’s way (yah, this is what I did) with an electric juicer:

Rainbow Gelatin Recipe

Voila! The orange cups are ready in just a couple minutes — and you get some freshly squeezed orange juice to boot! Put the orange cups into muffin tins so they sit upright and behave for you when you fill them with liquid gelatin.

Then start making the gelatin. Use whatever brand you want, but for rainbow wedges just like ours, you’ll need six flavors — lemon, orange, strawberry, lime, blueberry and grape. Rainbow-licious!

I made the gelatin two colors at a time and it was a piece of cake. Using 9 oranges (so 18 orange cups), you will have a lot of leftover gelatin. I just refrigerated mine in covered containers for another time, but you could make lots more orange cups if you want and fill those too.

So, here are my little rainbow bambinos chillaxin’ in the fridge:

Rainbow Dessert Recipe

You can put some wax paper or plastic wrap over the top if you want. The gelatin box says to give it 4 hours until it’s set, but I let mine tango with the salsa jar in the fridge overnight. Since we’re slicing these up, we need them good and set, not kinda-sorta there.

With a sharp knife, slice each cup into 3 or 4 wedges (depending on the size of your oranges and how big you want your wedges).

So, what could be more awesome than this on a picnic table?

Hi @Anonymous! I would recommend sticking to the amount of water called for on the packaged and not altering it but simply adding in the solid fruits you’ve mentioned. Does that help?

Gidday from downunder Ana, Annette back in Brissy again, how much water to jelly ratio and did you need xtra gelatine to help set the jelly? think it says 1 cup of water per 85g pkt, dont want this to fail and want the wow factor, need to get it right, ps luv the idea, high five girl

Hi @Anonymous! You can definitely experiment by tossing fruit in with the gelatin. I don’t think you’ll need to alter the water amount much, however, as the fruit will merely be an “extra.” :) Let us know how it turns out!

hey folks reading your awesome recipes hints and from Brisbane Australia if you dropped some blueberries in the jelly or chopped up grapes, would that work and still set if you use less water?

@cher492: Although I haven’t tried it with sugar-free gelatin, that should be just fine! If you try it, check back and let us know how they turned out!

Hi Kylene – The jelly shots will need to be refrigerated for at least four hours. If you are looking to make them in advance, keep it within one or two days to make sure the shots stay fresh and keep your favored consistency.

I cam across this idea from another site… just did them for two separate parties. What a hit!!! We did them as jello shots and boy were the kids disappointed. The second party had some of each. We did the “jiggler” recipe so they were more firm and then using jello shot recipes. We did oranges with orange jello with vanilla vodka=creamsicle flavored, yummy. We also did lemons with lemon jello and citrus vodka for lemon drop shots, light dusting of sugar just like the drink… OMGoodness!!! The kids were VERY happy with cherry jello in the oranges.

@Anonymous: Yes! You could use plain gelatin and color it with food colors for sure — even neon gel colors (HOW FUN!). If you go this route, you might want to use clear juice instead of water (like white grape) to add some flavor, as plain gelatin is usually also flavorless.

You could also use clear jello and you food coloring… I don’t think it would mess up the jello and how it sets. :)

What a beautiful use of clear color from your Jello. The flavors will match the colors so well. It will be a gorgeous ‘table topper’, offering a serious shot of color to your event!

I made a TON of these for a party I threw a few months back… Of course, I made all mine with alcohol, but that goes with pretty much everything I make. They were SUCH a hit!

I suggest getting the “add your own juice or soda” kind of Jello (I get 2 for a $.79 at the Dollar Store), that way you can make them taste like any kind of mixed drink you want!

I didn’t have a juicer at the time, so scraping out the guts took some time… I would also caution against using navel oranges. We had some problems with the liquid seeping out of the belly buttons.

Such a great idea!!!

If you used less water and made them like “jello jigglers” they would probably stand up better at a party. Just an idea.

You can’t use orange juice when making jello because the jello won’t set.

I would think it’d work fine with sugar-free gelatin, although I’ve never tried that. Sugar-free versions seem to set up just the same as the regular flavors. Anybody out there ever try these with sugar-free gelatin? As for using OJ instead of water — interesting idea! — although the colors may look more cloudy and less translucent. Keep the comments coming! Rainbow food is the best!

But why not use the orange juice instead of water when making the gelatin, and end up with an at least partly healthy food instead of something that’s merely sugar and coloring?
