Dump cake … not the most eloquent name for a dessert, but it’s A-MAZ-ING!

I grew up with all kinds of fruit-flavored dump cakes making their appearance at church potlucks or after Sunday dinner. Dump cakes are simple, decadent, and always a crowd pleaser.

This Pumpkin Dump Cake is no exception.

Easy Pumpkin Cake Recipe

Straight pumpkin out of the can isn’t really that appetizing, so I added some cinnamon and sweetened it up a bit with some simple ingredients. But once you’ve doctored up the pumpkin a little, let the dumping begin!

First, dump your sweetened pumpkin mixture into a baking dish. Then dump a cake mix evenly over the pumpkin layer. Dump some melted butter on top and you’re ready to bake this beauty!

Making Pumpkin Dump Cake

The smell of the pumpkin and spices baking will bring fall right into your house. This is a great alternative to your everyday pumpkin pie, for those of you who want to switch it up a bit.

The result is a creamy pumpkin layer topped with a buttery crust.

Pumpkin Dump Cake Recipe in the Pan

Enjoy this pumpkin dessert with some whipped cream or a big scoop of ice cream. The name might not be elegant, but it’ll totally impress your friends and family!

I made the Pumpkin with chopped walnuts (cost effective and still great) twice before and at Thanksgiving. Everyone just RAVED about it at work and home. For Christmas we will be trying the blueberry one. Keep your fingers crossed. Sounds so simple and very easy to memorize. About the question about using the 29oz can of real pumpkin. I measured it out in a glass measuring cup and saved the rest for something else.

I make my dump cake with a can of crushed pineapple (in its own juice) on the bottom and a can of cherry pie filling on top of it. Top with the cake mix and butter as usual.

I use pumpkin pie spice & cinnamon. Also, if you can use Milnot instead of evaporated milk it makes it better. I use Libby’s big can of Pumpkin Pie Mix. The recipe calls for 1stick of melted butter, but I always end up using more when trying to distribute the butter evenly on top of cake.

That’s not called Pumpkin Dump Cake. It’s called Pumpkin Pie Cake & I’ve been making it for over 20 yrs. My sister gave it to me when I got married. We put pecans on the top of it, which , makes it even more delishish.

This has been my traditional Thanksgiving dessert for over 20 years. So much easier than making pumpkin pie. Everyone love it. I use a spice cake mix for added flavor and of course a dollop of whipped cream to finish it off.

I’ve been making a Rhubarb cake for years. All I do is spray the pan. Layer a cake pan with cut up (1 in) rhubarb stalks. Pour a box of Jello (usually the strawberry big box) powder over the rhubarb. Make the yellow cake as directed and pour evenly over the rhubarb& jello. That’s it. Bake as directed for the cake mix. It resembles an upside down cake. It is awesome.

I make this with the pecans on top and wax paper in the bottom of the baking dish so when it is done, I take it out and flip it and ice it with cream cheese icing. I call it pumpkin crisp. The cake and nuts make the “crust” when it is flipped.

Can you make this with the canned pumpkin pie mix and if so how would I change the recipe? Grabbed the wrong can and don’t want to add a cup of sugar when the mix already is sweet.

Just use 2 1/2 cups pumpkin instead of a 20 ounce can.

Check online for a cake mix substitute – it’s just flour, sugar, etc. You can mix it up and keep it in your pantry for quite a long time so it is ready when you want it. Love “dump” cakes!

@cosenangel What a shame you don’t have access to a cake mix. I can only vouch for this working using a cake mix. A sponge cake is way too light a cake, I suspect it would not work well.

11/03/2011 9:07 AM

I want to do it, but I live in Sweden and we don’t have any cake mix. Does it work with a regular sponge cake? Or do I have to pay ridiculous sums of money to try and order that cake mix over the internet?

Made a delicious and super easy Dump Cake using 15oz pumpkin …not the one ready for a pie, just straight pumpin, added 1 spice cake mix and 1/2 cup water. Mix and bake at 350 in a 9×13 pan will golden.

This recipe is deliciously moist and I used it as a bar and also to make a low fat “trifle” in individual glasses layered with no fat topping. This recipe is weight watcher friendly.

I have made one using 1 can crushed pineapple, drained mixed with one can blueberry pie filling and use the butter flavored yellow cake mix on top & then slice a stick of butter on top.

10/31/2011 3:32 PM

@Anonymous,

I think with that much pumpkin you need a cup of sugar to make it sweet. It really isn’t that sweet. And yes, I’ve tried it with a Spice cake mix and it’s good also. Sometimes I put a 1/2 cup of chopped pecans on top too.

10/31/2011 2:49 PM

I’ve made both cherry & blueberry. 2 cans of pie filling then a box of yellow cake mix then a stick of butter cut into thin slices over cake mix. Bake 45 min at 350 til golden brown.

I normally use 1/2 brown sugar and 1/2 white sugar. It gives it a richer taste. I also use pumpkin pie spice rather than just cinnamon. I have used spice cake mix before, but I prefer either white or yellow cake mix.

First desert I taught my kids to make and they still take it to carry-ins. In 9 X 13 pan -DUMP one can crushed pineapple, one can cherry pie filling, top with one yellow cake mix. Dot top with one stick of butter or margarine pats and bake until it smells so good you HAVE to take it out! I will now teach the grandkids this twist with pumpkin!
