Pull out those red high heels and get sexy this Valentine’s day with these super simple Black & White Strawberries.
You know those fancy schmancy companies that dip strawberries and sell them to you for a thousand dollars an ounce? You don’t need ‘em!
This year, you can dip your own strawberries and make them look just like the top-notch gourmet guys do. Only, you’re going to do it right in your own kitchen, using a few of our totally sexy tips. Here’s how to get haute looking chocolate-dipped strawberries, in minutes, for a fraction of what you’d pay anywhere else!
The first step to groovy gourmet strawberries is to work in small batches. I like to grab some good-quality dark and white chocolate chips, then toss them into 1/2-cup sized recyclable plastic containers. This way, you’ve got a deep well for dipping, and you can toss the container when you’re done, so no messy clean up!
Proper preparation when home-dipping strawberries is key. Gently run a few strawberries at a time under a thin stream of very cold water. Don’t turn the tap on too high! You don’t want to bruise your fruit!
Place your washed strawberries on a clean paper towel and allow them to air dry completely before you even consider dipping those puppies in chocolate. Even a single drop of water will cause the chocolate to seize up. So, allow ample time for drying before you dip!
To prep your chocolate like a pro, melt your small container of chocolate chips for 20-30 seconds at a time in the microwave. Then remove the chips and stir. You don’t want them to ever get hot, just barely warm enough to melt the chocolate.
The other secret ingredient here is a half-teaspoon of coconut oil mixed in with your melted chocolate. This will thin the chocolate out and give it a nice, beautiful smoothness.
Dipping your strawberries on an angle not only gives you more chocolate on each strawberry, it also creates a lovely space for a second, artistic layer on the other side.
Whoever said “no double dipping” was clearly a fool. Dip that second side of your strawberries in a smooth dark chocolate coating for the ultimate presentation and flavor.
Allow the chocolate to drizzle slightly from the strawberry, then transfer your fruit to a piece of parchment paper. Sprinkle with decorative sprinkles, then allow the chocolate to cool and harden before serving.
Home-dipped strawberries are best served within a couple of hours of dipping. They should be stored in a cool, dry place for up to 3 hours, then can be transferred to the fridge and stored there for up to 12 hours. Store them too long and the fruit will begin weeping, so preparing the strawberries just before needed is the best way to ensure a high-quality product.
