Who knew a 4th of July dessert could be its own fireworks display filled with color, lights, and explosion?

This super fun and eye-catching Firecracker Cake is vibrant and patriotic … just what you need for this 4th of July!

With some creative coloring of a cake mix, the inside of this cake is a shocking surprise of red, white, and blue.

Start by dividing your cake batter into three parts and coloring some of it red and some of it blue, leaving the remainder white.

Pour the red cake batter in the bottom of a Bundt pan first. Next, carefully layer your white cake batter, and end with a ring of blue batter on top. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but the more you separate the batter the more distinct the colored designs will be. And who knows what pattern it will actually make until you cut into the cake. There’s no way to screw this up!

The top of the cake is drizzled generously with red, white, and blue frosting and topped with colorful sprinkles.

To surprise your guests with an explosion in their mouths like I did, sprinkle some strawberry flavored Pop Rocks on top. Everyone turns into a kid when Pop Rocks are bursting in their mouths!

And just when you thought this cake couldn’t possibly get any cooler, I took it to ONE more level of explosion … sparklers!!! You don’t have to wait until dark to watch these fireworks. Start your fireworks show right after dinner with this Firecracker Cake!

prescott2 – yes you can color any foods with all natural petroleum-free food colorings from India Tree, Chocolate Craft, Seelect, Maggie’s Naturals, and some items from ChefMaster. Or you can color frosting with many natural things like avocado, blueberries, raspberries, turmeric, etc. ~Rebecca, http://www.DieFoodDye.com

@prescott2 – Thanks! Be sure and post pics once yours is all decorated. Btw, the cake is not dry at all and is very tasty. @ollyood – Post a pic of your cake, if possible. I warmed my frosting and went all Jackson Pollock on the cake, drizzling the frosting all over it. It was fun!

I just made it, but i didn’t warm the frosting. First i put the white on the cake, then i put the blue frosting in a baggy and red in another and squeezed it in different directions then put a little of the red, white and blue sprinkles all over it. It looks pretty neat. My husband help me to lol. He and i are chefs in our kitchen.

I made this cake early this morning. I haven’t cut it yet, but it looks great! – http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f191/algonacchick/4thofJulycake2012002.jpg I used 1/2 cup Greek yogurt and 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt. I’ll take a pic after it’s cut, and tell you how it tastes. Thanks for the recipe!

I just finished baking this cake and it looks awesome! I added 1 package of cheesecake flavored instant pudding, 1 cup sour cream, 1 tsp. vanilla and an extra egg. Cooked for 50 minutes, waiting for it to cool so I can frost it! Thanks so much for the great idea! Happy 4th of July!!

Ok, thank you for replying.

@algonacchick, This recipe is adapted from Betty Crocker as noted in the recipe directions. Bundt cakes can tend to be on the dry side so the yogurt adds some moisture.

Is the yogurt added to make the batter thicker? Betty Crocker has this same cake on their site, sans the addition of yogurt.

@Anonymous,

You could definitely bake it in round cake pans too. You will have enough batter for two round pans so you could layer some frosting in between the cakes. Just bake them according to the package directions for round pans on the back.

It’s a great recipe using the colored batter. I understand using the colored sprinkles, pop rocks, and sparklers for effect! Using the Betty Crocker canned White Frosting, makes it quite easy to mix the colors. HAPPY 4TH. OF JULY – ONE AND ALL!!!!!!

I was worried about the sparklers leaving residue but they didn’t. A 12 cup bundt is standard so your’re all set. You can leave out the yogurt if you want. To get the frosting to drizzle just microwave it for a few seconds.

Thinking about making this for my 20th wedding anniversary on the 4th! I love the pop rock idea, our 3 boys would think this cake was “rockin”

6/25/2012 2:50 PM

12 cups is a standard bundt pan size. This looks fun and festive! I’d probably leave off the Pop Rocks.

last time I put sparklers on a cake the sparklers shed ashes all over the cake frosting. Does anyone know of a better way to color cake batter than with food coloring- hate a blue tongue.

I drizzle frosting like that by warming it first in the microwave and them using a spoon to drizzle over cake. Kinda like the author said about the batter, you really can’t mess it up!

To make frosting drizzle u need to make it with powdered sugar and make it runny but not too runnt

I wonder if this recipe would work in a regular bundt cake pan. Any ideas?
